The internet may be the first time in human history where our relationship is defined almost entirely by metaphor. Metaphor is useful because it helps us process complex ideas within a kind of familiar envelope. The danger is that the metaphoric envelope also limits what we believe about those complex ideas in ways we have to work to be aware of.

We’ve started a blog to begin writing about issues of technology, art, and education.

Cascading Recombinant Chaos describes the idea that the process we used to think of as ‘convergence’ has gotten out of control, kind of like the old Mr Wizard demonstration with mouse traps and pingpong balls. All kinds of stuff are combining and recombining so fast, the staid process of convergence now resembles a clothes dryer full of wet clothes. Full story on page 17 »


As Well As

The I Ching makes a distinction between the simple and the easy. It’s easy to think I’d like to visit Aunt Sue and be back in time to feed the chickens. It’s simple to get a friend to take you to the DMV, get a learner’s permit, have another friend teach you to drive, go back to the DMV, pass the test, research cars on the web, decide on a Honda, get a third friend to take you to the dealership, get a bank loan, drive over to get a Big Mac before you stop in and say Hi to Aunt Sue, and still get home to feed the birds before it gets dark.
